And the winner is...

I was thrilled to receive the Award of Excellence at the annual conference in Atlanta of my national professional organization, City-County Communications and Marketing Association (3CMA), for phase one of the community engagement program for Pasadena's General Plan update that took place over the course of nine months in 2009.

I submitted our entry in the category Citizen Participation/ Community Visioning.

The program included stakeholder interviews, MoveAbout tours, a speaker series, community workshops, an open house extravaganza and a youth component.

This was a team effort that included the Planning and Development Department, the Public Affairs Office and the General Plan Update Advisory Committee. Many thanks to all staff involved, including Stephanie DeWolfe, Jason Mikaelian, Scott Reimers, Vicki Carrillo, Zack Stromberg, Susan Soto and others.

In addition to attending several workshops during the conference, I co-led two of them: "Crisis Communications and Social Media" and "Going Digital."

Here I am at the podium just before the "Going Digital" session began, with my long-time pal Heather Morris, director of communications for the Port of Long Beach (photo by Margaret Magee of the Port of Long Beach).

It's always good to get away for an annual conference, network with peers from around the nation, learn a little and teach a little.

And now, back to work.

Mystery History -- Solved

11:41 A.M. UPDATE: That Bellis is a sneaky one! I didn't realize until just now that she posted an 11:34 p.m. guess last night: "I like the idea of Jack Parsons, but I think this is the Dutch chemist Arie Haagen-Smit (not to be confused with Haagen-Dazs) in his lab at Caltech." So she wins the fabulous prize!
===================================================

I scooped everybody this week, although Bellis posted her guess from a coincidental location!

In the photo above, Caltech Professor Arie Haagen-Smit is in a campus laboratory demonstrating how smog is formed by photochemical reactions of unburned hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and ozone.

Born in Utrecht in the Netherlands, this “father of air pollution control” is best known for finding a direct link between automobiles in Southern California and the heavy smog that plagued the region for decades.

Ironically, Dr. Haagen-Smit was a heavy smoker. He died of lung cancer in 1977 at the age of 76.

There’s a nice little tribute to him here by a Caltech biology professor who worked closely with him.

Every year the State of California Air Resources Board presents the Haagen-Smit Clean Air Awards in his memory.

Chip Jacobs has a smog blog.

And see a recent L.A. Times article here.

As you probably know, there’s always a direct tie-in to local Pasadena government on all of my Mystery History reveals. So where’s the City of Pasadena tie-in for this one, you ask?

Bike Week Pasadena is coming up in two weeks!

There will be activities at Pasadena Museum of History, Central Park and other locations.

One of the guiding principles of Pasadena’s General Plan states “Pasadena will be a city where people can circulate without cars.”

Not a bike rider? You can still leave your car behind a take a Pasadena ARTS Bus, the Metro Gold Line (or even a combination of the two), or put on your walking shoes and get going!

Many thanks to Caltech and the California Air Resources Board.

What Do You Think?

As Pasadena’s General Plan is updated, it's important to include the perspectives of everyone in the community.

The City of Pasadena is making it easy for you! From Aug. 22 through Sept. 27, you can take one or more MoveAbout Tours and share your thoughts with city planners.

Each of the six self-guided tours has been designed to highlight specific issues such as residential density, walkability, bikeability, architectural design, open space, re-use of historic buildings and more.

Guidebooks with simple instructions, background information, questions to consider, maps and more are available at locations throughout Pasadena including City Hall, public libraries and community centers.

Look for this poster -- the MoveAbout guidebooks will be nearby.

Take one or more of the tours on your own, with friends, family or co-workers. Be sure to get your guidebook stamped by merchants along the way so you'll be eligible for free prizes at a General Plan community open house in November. (You'll need to turn your guidebook(s) in no later than Sept. 14 at any of the locations where they're available.)

The ARTS Bus and Walking Tour combines a ride through Pasadena’s biotechnology and health care district and a walking tour through one of the community’s oldest residential neighborhoods.

On the Bicycle Tour you'll experience a variety of streets designated or soon-to-be designated for bicycle travel, visit several parks and see the city’s latest solar installation.

Driving? On the Driving Tour East you'll experience a neighborhood that's transitioning from residential to industrial uses, a group of suburban-oriented residential and commercial developments, and some of Pasadena’s ethnic commercial business districts. You can also choose the Driving Tour West to experience the diversity of Pasadena’s built landscape as you drive from the health care and biotechnology corridor to a thriving transit-oriented urban center and historic northwest neighborhoods that are in transition.

If you haven't traveled via light rail lately, go on the Gold Line Tour! You'll visit four of the six stations in Pasadena and experience some adjacent mixed-use housing and commercial developments.

If you love the great outdoors, you'll love the Open Space Tour that includes a full range of Pasadena’s parks, community gardens and more.

The MoveAbout Tours are part of a community outreach effort that has been launched to help Pasadenans speak their minds about four of the most important elements (chapters) of the General Plan: Land Use (where different types of buildings should be located), Mobility (how we get from place to place), and Open Space and Conservation (how open space and natural resources should be preserved). These critical elements will guide how Pasadena grows and changes, how parks and open space are prioritized, and how people will move around town in the future.

Now get up and go!

The sheer reality of time prevents them from meeting with everybody, so we’re calling on neighborhood leaders, business owners and others to plan their own Do-It-Yourself (DIY) workshops! Workshop kits will be available at a briefing on Aug. 5 in the Fair Oaks Conference Room (basement room 039) at Pasadena City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave. You’ll get an overview of the General Plan update process, a review of the DIY workshop kit contents, and step-by-step training on how to facilitate your own community workshop for your organization.
