I'm kinda hoping the Editor of our Pasadena paper knows what he's talking about when it comes to Pasadena. It wood bee like a crime if he didn't know this sorta thing. And, the Rose Bowl bldg was also my 1st thought too!
Therefore, this leads me to sniff out a different guess: miners digging out the last of our coal and/or gold reserves.
Somehow I can't believe it's the Rose Bowl. I'm with Cafe, it looks like a mine. But we never had mines in Pasadena, did we? Las Flores, maybe, but that's not Las Flores Canyon. I'm stumped.
Actually, Petrea, I DID wanna 1st say the construction of the Rose Bowl. But Frank is an earlier riser who beat me to it. So, I offered a different reasonable answer.

building of the rose bowl in arroyo seco
Darn it, I got there too late! This is indeed the Rose Bowl under construction, early 1920s. The first game was played in 1923.

Yes, I'm also going to go on a random other option and say it has something to do with a dam being built at the bottom of Hahamongna.
