Mystery History -- Solved!

Bellis wins with her 10:02 a.m. Tuesday guess "Construction of a water tunnel at Devil's Gate dam?"

In the 1934 photo above, an unidentified man stands at the entrance of a water tunnel at the dam.

Here's the dam under construction in 1920:

Before construction began, Devil's Gate looked like this (see the devil's profile?):

I've done other Mystery History contests about Devil's Gate in the past. Learn more about its history here.

Many thanks to Pasadena Public Library.

Congratulations, Bellis. Devilishly good.

(Best I can do. I've been cooking all afternoon.)

Why is "the man" always "unidentified"? What's up with that? Were these guys in the CIA or something?

Wow, I've won, thanks! Where was Petrea? She'd have recognized it too. We both tramped to that tunnel entrance recently for a PDP blog, and it doesn't look that clean anymore. My guess is, it's quite a long tunnel.

Congrats to Bellis! A well deserved Victory.

Btw, Petrea has gone into retreat, or hibernation for an animal, after your wonderful final answer.

I was there, I was just later than you. Congratulations, Bellis!

Living now in North Carolina, I don't visit Pasadena often, but I enjoy occasionally reading the Pasadena PIO blog. It always brings back memories (thanks, Ann!).

Living in the house my father built on Rosemont Avenue, my brother and I made the area below Devil's Gate "ours" in the late 50's and early 60's, exploring every part, horizontal to nearly vertical. Bellis, that tunnel goes to the other side of the dam where there there is a steel gate valve if I remember correctly (and I may not as it was pretty dark most of the way and I was scared to death!). I just hope there is a statute of limitations for trespassing on Flood Control property...
